## What are the differences in a hybrid car?

Hybrid cars combine combustion engines with electric batteries. A distinction is made between the traditional hybrid car and the rechargeable hybrid car (PHEV). Their difference lies in the capacity of the battery and the means for recharging. A hybrid car, also known as a "Full Hybrid", is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 1kWh. Its range is limited and its maximum speed is around 50 km/h. More recently, "mild hybrid" vehicles have appeared. They are equipped with an electric motor to assist the combustion engine during acceleration. It is a simple support and cannot replace the combustion engine. However, it reduces consumption and is cheaper to install.
Finally, the Plug-in Hybrid is equipped with a more powerful battery that can be recharged from an electrical outlet like an electric car. Its capacity varies between 8 and 12 kWh and offers a range of 20 to 60 km with a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The combustion engine takes over when the car exceeds the maximum speed allowed by the battery power or when the battery is discharged. The battery is recharged at a charging station or a 220 V socket.
Hybrid cars are appreciated for their lower fuel consumption compared to a petrol car and their lower CO² emissions. The combustion vehicle generates a loss of kinetic energy in braking or deceleration mode, while the hybrid recovers this energy to recharge the battery. In built-up areas, a hybrid car consumes little fuel and makes little noise. At the end of the lease term, the leased vehicle has to be returned to the lessor, who may then charge the lessee for depreciation due to the wear. Therefore, one should not approach the return of the vehicle too recklessly and expect that everything will already be arranged by the provider. You often risk a hefty bill, but one which you can protect yourself from, if you observe a few basic rules and invest a little effort. 


## Contract clauses - What matters?

The first basic rule is very simple: You should know your leasing contract and the terms agreed upon it. In most contracts, the sum still outstanding at the end of the contract is calculated from the tabular residual value of the vehicle, taking into account extraordinary wear and tear and possible damages. This is also known as a residual value leasing. In rare cases, the mileage of the vehicle is decisive. In this case, a compensation payment is only due if the lessee exceeds the permissible mileage. In most cases, however, leasing companies offer the first option and may include the mileage restriction as an additional clause in the contract. In these cases, exceeding the permissible mileage is regarded as a reduction in value, irrespective of the condition of the vehicle.


## Determine the value of the vehicle

Since the residual value of the vehicle is calculated from various factors such as age, model, mileage, engine and condition, the layman is usually well advised to have the value of the car estimated by an independent appraiser at the time of return. On one hand, you have a counter-assessment if the lessor's assessment is less favourable. Damages that the lessor may have discovered, which were valued lower on his own appraisal or were not present, offer a good basis for negotiation in the event of disputes over certain details. On the other hand, you can consider other options before returning the car.


## Find a buyer for the car yourself

If you want to avoid the costs of returning the car, you can sell the vehicle yourself at the end of the contract. The purchase price achieved can often even be higher than the transfer fee still to be paid to the lessor. In addition to your own expert opinion, it is advisable to compare the prices for cars of comparable age and condition online. In many cases it makes sense to invest some extra time. Instead of selling the car privately, you can of course get an offer from a dealer, especially if you're thinking about leasing a car again. A new contract partner for leasing may offer you better conditions and a higher price for your vehicle if he can conclude a contract for it.


## The condition is decisive

Regardless of whether you want to return the car to your leasing provider or sell it elsewhere, it is always in your best interest to know the exact condition of the vehicle and to document it. If you have already had an expert opinion drawn up, the garage has probably already documented the vehicle with photos. If not, you should make your own photos of all parts of the car that show the condition of the paint, headlights, rims and interior.

## How are damages assessed?

This is also an important point. Not everything that appears to be a damage at first glance can be claimed as such by the leasing company. Leasing providers occasionally try to declare minor blemishes such as minor dents and fine scratches in the top coat, as damage that affects the residual value of the vehicle. It is good to know that small paint damages such as dents with a diameter of less than 2 cm are not  regarded as damage, but as normal wear and tear. These must therefore not appear as defects in your acceptance certificate. The same applies to scratches in rims or wheel covers: these are also considered normal wear. Even 10 cm long scratches on the bumper and radiator grille are considered normal wear.
Here too, however, it pays to not only clean the car thoroughly before handing it over, but also give the paint a polish. This not only enhances the car's appearance and makes it look like new, but it can also remove lighter scratches. The interior should also be clean and free of odours. In particular smokers and/or animal owners should be particularly thorough here, in order to free the vehicle of traces of cigarette smoke, ashes or hair. Dirty and/or worn floor mats will also affect the residual value, as will worn upholstery. An intensive cleaning in a specialized workshop or with a special upholstery cleaner can possibly do a good job and save a few francs.
There are also requirements for the tires with regard to their condition when they are returned. Tyres must have a tread of at least 1.6 mm. You are not obliged to return the car with a second set of tyres if it was delivered with only one set at the start of the contract.

## On return

If the return is actually due, you should consider the following points: 
- It is best to return the previously cleaned and documented vehicle in the presence of a second person and have the handover acknowledged with time and date. 
- It is important to discuss the condition of the vehicle with the lessor on the spot and have any visible damage described in detail in the handover report. 
- The length of existing scratches and the size of paint damage should be exactly listed there. 

If there are any discrepancies between you and the lessor, the handover report should also state that you do not agree with the assessment. The actual approval of the residual value of the car is carried out in the lessor's workshop. Take your time to go through any defects in detail and compare them with your own appraisal. Especially minor paint damage and scratches are not seldom listed on the return certificate, but must not be evaluated. So don't just accept the expert opinion, but check it thoroughly so that you won't be overcharged here.
 
## Conclusion

So if you take a little initiative on your own, you can estimate the additional costs you will incur at the end of the lease before you return the car. This provides you with a better basis for negotiation and you don't have to rely solely on the lessor's expert opinion, which sometimes contains points that can be challenged. In particular, you should pay attention to the exact recording of damages and possibly have an independent expert opinion drawn up, as this will enable you to counter any claims and better protect yourself against unforeseen costs.

Even if a leasing contract is not equivalent to a credit contract, leasing companies expect a certain security in advance to grant the contract. If you pay close attention to these following points, there will be nothing in the way to your new dream car. In summary, a lease in Switzerland must meet the following conditions, which are explained in the following sections:
- __Creditworthiness.__ The lessor's bank generally requires proof that you are able to pay the instalments over the agreed period.
- __Residence in Switzerland.__ Only Swiss citizens residing in Switzerland or persons holding a B or C residence permit, valid until at least to the end of the lease term can enter into a leasing contract.
 
 
## Financial requirements

The first point concerns the financial side, more precisely the creditworthiness of the lessee. In most cases, lessors require an extract from the debt collection register. This provides information on whether financial liabilities have been paid on time in the past and whether there is no debt collection against the lessee. If your debt collection register excerpt contains entries, now might be a good time to repay the outstanding liabilities. If there are still entries that have already been settled, you may be able to negotiate with the former creditors and have the entries deleted so that this does not stand in the way of your new lease. There are also providers who offer leasing contracts with a negative debt collection register extract. Here, however, you should check very carefully whether it is really a serious provider. As a general rule, the if so-called "inspection fees" are charged in advance just to check your application and regardless of whether a leasing contract is actually granted or not, you should keep your hands off it. In principle, the decision as to whether a leasing contract is granted or not lies with the leasing company and is made on a case-by-case basis. The main factor in the assessment is whether or not your monthly disposable income is sufficient for the instalment after deduction of all liabilities and living expenses.

It is not only a clean debt collection register extract that determines whether you can be granted a leasing contract, but also the amount of your income and other liabilities. Being able to present an unlimited employment contract with a sufficient monthly salary is the best conceivable prerequisite for a positive decision. However, other sources of income such as self-employment can also be considered, whereas the receipt of unemployment benefits is usually not considered sufficient. The decisive factor here is not regularity, but the level of income. In any case, the lessor's bank will check whether you have a sufficient monthly amount available to pay the leasing instalments. It is therefore advisable to calculate in advance how much money you actually have available for a car each month. This will also help you decide which model to buy. When filling in the application form, it is essential that you provide truthful information that will stand up to scrutiny. This means that you normally have to prove to the bank that you have a regular income or that you have sufficient assets to be granted a lease. Family circumstances and any other liabilities are also taken into account.
 
 
## Further requirements

In order to lease a vehicle in Switzerland, the lessee must also have a permanent residence in Switzerland. However, not only Swiss citizens receive a leasing contract, but also temporary  B residence permits or C settlement permits entitle them to conclude a leasing contract, provided that the end date of the residence permit is after the expiry date of the leasing contract. Of course, this only applies if the above financial requirements are met.


## Alternative possibilities

There are cases where the monthly income is high enough, but the bank cannot prove this sufficiently. This is the case, for example, with self-employed persons or young entrepreneurs who are not yet in a position to submit the relevant balance sheets. In those cases, a security in the form of a down payment of an appropriate amount or a deposit of 25% of the purchase price, for example, can often be agreed with the lessor in order to get the desired leased vehicle after all.

## Financing
When financing a car, you pay a monthly fee which covers the price of the car over time. Once approved, the financing bank will transfer the amount you desire to your account with which you can use to buy the car. The car is fully owned by you and the money you owe to the bank is tax deductible. You can enter with any down-payment you want to get to the desired monthly rate. The bank is the final decider of the credit conditions based on your financial situation. Usually, the bank charges a steep interest rate (much higher than leasing) to cover the risk, around 8-10%.

## Leasing
Leasing is basically a long-term rental. Like with financing you can enter with any down-payment but unlike financing, you don’t own the car and the payments are not tax deductible. The big difference with financing is that with leasing, the car has a residual value set by the leasing company.
