Tesla Model S vs Tesla Model X: The Main Differences
The Model S is a low-slung, sporty saloon-style sedan that rivals the big BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis. Introduced in 2012, it was Tesla’s first mass-market success and remains a top choice for those seeking a luxury electric vehicle. It features conventional doors and a design that's closer to traditional sedans, but with the futuristic edge that Tesla is known for.
It is available with different electric motors and features, as an option, the yoke steering wheel that gives it the feel of a racecar or fighter jet - not everyone’s cup of tea but certainly something innovative.

On the other hand, the Model X is Tesla's large SUV, also debuting in 2012 but with deliveries starting in 2015. It’s known for its Falcon Wing rear doors, which are hinged at the top and open upwards, giving it a distinctive and functional design.
This SUV is larger, offering more space and seating options, which makes it perfect for families or those needing more cargo room. It is also available with different motor options, and the yoke was also recently introduced.
In terms of dimensions, the Model S is 4,979mm long and 2,187mm wide, whereas the Model X is slightly longer at 5,037mm and wider at 2,271mm.
These dimensions give the Model X a more commanding presence on the road, but the Model S still holds its own with its sportier, more aerodynamic profile.
Practicality
When it comes to practicality, both the Model S and Model X shine, but in different ways. The Model S, with its saloon-style body, offers a substantial amount of boot space for a sedan.
You get 745 liters of cargo space, which is more than enough for daily errands and road trips. Additionally, there's extra storage under the boot floor and a front trunk (frunk) that's perfect for storing charging cables and other small items.
The Model X takes practicality to another level. It’s designed to be a family-friendly vehicle with multiple seating configurations. You can choose between five, six, or seven seats, making it adaptable to various needs. The rear-most seats are usable for adults, though they are best suited for shorter trips.
With all seats in use, the Model X still offers a significant amount of cargo space, and when the seats are folded down, you get a massive 2,180 liters. Plus, it boasts the largest frunk of any Tesla model, with 187 liters of space.
Equipment
Tesla is known for packing its cars with cutting-edge technology and safety features, and the Model S and Model X are no exceptions.
Both vehicles come equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems, including multiple cameras and sensors that provide a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings. This helps in preventing collisions and enhances overall safety. Both cars have received five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP, underscoring their safety credentials.
In terms of technology, both the Model S and Model X feature a large 17-inch touchscreen that controls almost all of the car’s functions. This central, portrait-mounted screen is bigger than most laptop screens and operates on Tesla’s own software.
While they lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Tesla’s continuous over-the-air updates ensure that the system remains current and functional. Both models also come with built-in apps like Spotify and, from late 2022, Apple Music.
Interior
Inside, the Model S and Model X share a lot of similarities, reflecting Tesla's minimalist design philosophy. Both interiors are almost identical, featuring a sleek, modern aesthetic with high-quality materials.
The Model S features a conventional rear bench seat that can accommodate three passengers comfortably. Some older models even offered a pair of rear-facing seats that fold out of the boot floor, suitable for small children, which added to its versatility.
The overall feeling inside the Model S is one of sporty elegance, with enough space to keep passengers comfortable without sacrificing the car’s performance-oriented design.

The Model X, however, is where Tesla's interior design truly shines for families and larger groups. The SUV can be configured with five, six, or seven seats. The six-seat configuration includes two individual seats in the middle row, which are particularly luxurious but less common.
The seven-seat configuration is ideal for larger families, providing ample space for everyone. The Model X’s seats are designed to be functional and comfortable, even in the rearmost row, which can accommodate adults for shorter journeys.

Performance and Driving Experience
The Model S is renowned for its sporty handling and blistering speed. It offers both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options, with the latter providing exceptional traction and stability.
The Model S Plaid version, in particular, is a powerhouse, boasting a tri-motor setup that can achieve 0-100 km/h in just under 2 seconds. This makes it one of the fastest production cars in the world. The ride is smooth and responsive, with precise steering that makes it a joy to drive on both city streets and winding roads.
The Model X, while not as sporty as the Model S, still delivers a remarkable driving experience for an SUV. Its all-wheel drive system provides excellent grip, and the vehicle’s height and weight are well-managed by the low-mounted batteries.
The Model X Plaid is no slouch either, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds. Despite its size, the Model X feels stable and controlled, even in tight corners. Its higher driving position and panoramic windshield give drivers a commanding view of the road, enhancing the driving experience.
Costs of Ownership
When it comes to costs, both the Tesla Model S and Model X are premium vehicles, and their prices reflect that. However, they also offer considerable savings in terms of running costs compared to traditional internal combustion engine cars.

The Model S is perfect for those who prioritize sporty performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology in a sleek sedan package. It’s a car that offers exhilarating speed, impressive range, and a high-tech, minimalist interior.
The Model X, on the other hand, is ideal for families or anyone needing more space and versatility. Its spacious interior, multiple seating configurations, and massive cargo capacity make it a practical choice without sacrificing performance or technology. The Falcon Wing doors add a touch of flair and functionality, making it a standout in the SUV market.
Both vehicles embody Tesla’s commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability, providing exceptional driving experiences that are hard to match. Whether you choose the Model S or the Model X, you’re getting a car that’s at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution.
