Tesla Model 3 vs. Polestar 2: The Main Differences

Price and Prestige

In the electric vehicle arena, the Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3 are in a similar arena. The Polestar 2, starting at CHF 48,900, enters the market as a symbol of Scandinavian elegance and innovation while maintaining its connection to established motoring features. On the other hand, the Tesla Model 3, priced slightly lower at CHF 46,990, sets a differing vision of the electric vehicles.

Owning a Tesla is often seen as owning a piece of the future – a testament to cutting-edge technology and a commitment to a zero-emissions world. While both cars are priced in the premium segment, the Tesla Model 3 edges ahead in terms of global recognition and prestige, often being the go-to choice for EV enthusiasts seeking performance combined with the cachet of the Tesla brand.

Design Philosophy: Polestar 2 vs. Tesla Model 3

The design philosophies of the Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3 reflect a tale of two distinct approaches to electric vehicle aesthetics. The Tesla Model 3, a familiar sight on roads, continues to embody Tesla's signature style with its sleek, modern, rounded look.

Characterized by flush door handles, a uniform color palette, and a gracefully curved roofline, the Model 3's design, especially with the recent facelift, remains a benchmark for contemporary EV design. It's a design that speaks to Tesla's commitment to a future-forward, minimalist aesthetic.

In contrast, the Polestar 2 presents a more angular and robust form, diverging from Tesla's design language. It inherits Volvo's design heritage, evident in its squared-off light bar and slim front headlights, offering a more pronounced, blockier appearance.

The Polestar 2's color scheme, more muted than Tesla's, complements its Scandinavian roots, emphasizing a different kind of modern luxury. It is quiet, understated, and refined, not meaning to impose, while still being very recognisably, well, a kind-of Volvo.

Interior

The interior ambiance of the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 reflects their distinct philosophies and target audiences. The Tesla Model 3's interior is a testament to minimalism and futuristic design. If you look through the steering wheel you will find… nothing!

Instead, all of your info is displayed on the 15.4-inch screen on the centre console. It controls almost every aspect of the car, from climate to navigation, emphasizing a tech-forward, sleek environment. The choice of faux leather upholstery in black or black and white adds to its modern, clean aesthetic. This minimalist approach may appeal to tech enthusiasts and those who prefer a clutter-free, streamlined environment.

In contrast, the Polestar 2 offers a blend of modern technology with a touch of traditional design elements. Its interior is slightly busier, featuring more physical controls, which might be appreciated by those who prefer tactile feedback and quicker access to car functions.

The vertically aligned big screen, loaded with Google's Android Automotive system, and a digital instrument cluster, provide a high-tech feel but with a more conventional approach. The inclusion of CarPlay and Android Auto offers greater flexibility in connectivity, catering to a broader range of user preferences.

Practicality

How Practical are the Polestar 2 or the Tesla Model 3?

Space for Passengers:

In comparing passenger space, the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 both offer comfortable interiors, but with distinct styles. The Model 3's minimalist design creates an open, airy feel, with ample legroom and a panoramic glass roof enhancing the sense of space. Its rear seating is spacious, catering well to adult passengers.

The Polestar 2, with its Scandinavian-inspired interior, balances luxury and practicality. It provides generous headroom and legroom, ensuring comfort for both front and rear passengers. While both vehicles excel in spaciousness, the choice hinges on preference for Tesla's sleek minimalism or Polestar's luxurious practicality.

Boot Space:

In the realm of boot space, the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 showcase their practicality in electric vehicle design. In the Tesla, you will get 337 litres of room, while the Polestar will grant you 405 litres of stowage. Since both cars are electric, the space under the bonnet, also called frunk, can be used to store additional things, such as the charging cable or other bits and bobs. In the Polestar, the frunk offers 35 litres, in the Tesla it is 88 litres.

Everyday Usability

Navigating city streets or crowded parking lots is a breeze with both the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, thanks to their well-designed visibility and agile handling. Their dimensions, while slightly larger than traditional compact cars, still allow for ease of parking, a crucial factor in urban environments.

Both models come equipped with advanced parking aids, making it effortless to maneuver into those challenging parking spots. The Model 3's Autopark feature and the Polestar 2's parking assistance technology alleviate the stress associated with tight parking situations.

Whether it's for daily commuting, running errands, or embarking on longer journeys, these cars cater to the practical needs of modern drivers. They combine space, comfort, and user-friendly technology, making either vehicle an excellent choice for those who prioritize practicality, without sacrificing style or the joy of driving.

The comfortable seating in both cars allows for a good position that treats both your back and butt. In the Polestar, the seats are somewhat more hugging, and you feel generally more like in a cockpit compared to the Tesla.

However, if a roomy and airy interior is what you prefer, then the Tesla will give this to you. It still has a centre armrest that provides comfort, but the seats are far less shaped to your body, but nonetheless very comfy.

Equipment

What Equipment and Features do you get with either the Polestar 2 or the Tesla Model 3?

Safety Standards:

The Tesla Model 3 is equipped with advanced safety features. It boasts a robust structure with a high-strength steel frame, providing exceptional protection in case of collisions. Additionally, the Model 3 includes Tesla's renowned Autopilot system, which, while not a substitute for attentive driving, enhances safety with features like automatic emergency braking, collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring.

It must be said though that this feature is not yet road legal in Switzerland. There is a pending green light to allow hands-free driving on motorways though.

On the other hand, the Polestar 2, emerging from the Volvo lineage, carries the brand's legacy of safety. It features a high-strength steel safety cage and innovative safety technologies like Pilot Assist, which aids in steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads. The Polestar 2 also includes safety systems like the Collision Avoidance and Mitigation by Braking and Steering, which actively helps to prevent accidents.

Tech Treats:

In the Model 3 you will find a tech lover's dream, boasting a sleek, button-free interior dominated by a large touchscreen. This interface isn't just about looks; it's a central hub for various functions, including a unique mix of entertainment and utility features like games, a web browser, and even a digital whoopee cushion!

Plus, Tesla is known for their software updates, which often feel like getting a new car experience without changing the car! Since the screen is located on the centre console, it might take some getting used to looking at it to get info about your speed or to look at the satnav. Finding the various functions such as wind screen wipers or lights can be a bit fiddly at times.

The interior features a big, clean touchscreen that runs on an Android-based system, already loaded with Google Maps that can be projected to fill the gauge cluster, so that you never have to take your eyes off the road for more than half a second.

It's user-friendly, straightforward, and looks super sleek. Polestar also keeps things fresh with regular software updates, ensuring your ride stays up-to-date.

The audio systems in both cars are very good quality, but there are extra marks for the more high-end Polestar 2s, which offer a Harman Kardon system that truly envelops you in music.

Running and Maintenance Costs

When choosing between the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2, a key factor to consider is the maintenance and running costs, along with reliability. Both vehicles, being electric, offer the inherent benefit of reduced maintenance costs compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. This advantage stems from fewer moving parts and the absence of oil changes.

The Tesla Model 3, a product of a company that's been a front-runner in the EV market, brings with it a history of innovation and improvement. Tesla’s extensive experience in electric vehicles contributes to their reliability.

Additionally, the Model 3's access to Tesla's vast and efficient Supercharger network simplifies charging and enhances the ownership experience. However, it's worth noting that Tesla's cutting-edge technology and specific parts can sometimes lead to higher costs if repairs outside warranty are required.

On the other hand, Polestar 2 emerges from the Volvo lineage, known for its emphasis on quality and durability. Being relatively new in the EV market doesn't overshadow its robust build and the backing of Volvo’s long-standing reputation in car manufacturing.

The Polestar 2's maintenance might be influenced by Volvo's established service network, which could offer more conventional servicing costs. However, being a newer model, the long-term reliability of the Polestar 2 is something that remains to be seen as more units hit the road and accumulate mileage.

Conclusion

In the dynamic world of electric vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 stand out as top contenders, each with unique offerings. Tesla, a trailblazer in the EV market, brings the Model 3 to the table with its proven track record and widespread Supercharger network, enhancing its practicality. The Model 3's pricing spectrum makes it a financially savvy choice for many. It is simply the go-to electric sedan around right now.

Polestar 2, hailing from the house of Volvo, enters the arena with the reliability and design excellence synonymous with its parent company. While starting at a slightly higher price point, it introduces a blend of Scandinavian design and advanced technology, making it a strong competitor in the luxury EV segment.

Its commitment to quality and the backing of Volvo’s extensive automotive experience render it a compelling option for those seeking a blend of modernity and heritage. It is a good alternative to the Model 3 and for those that do not want a run-of-the-mill EV.

Ultimately, your choice between these two EV pioneers hinges on what you value most: Tesla's pioneering spirit and extensive network or Polestar's fresh take on luxury and design, backed by Volvo’s legacy. Both vehicles promise an exhilarating ride into the future of automotive technology, each with its unique flair.
